Credit card debt consolidation service is a service provided by an organization or company that helps you to consolidate your credit card debt.  If you have recently begun to find it more and more difficult to meet your monthly credit card debt payments, it might be a good time to look into consolidating your debt.  Many people when they begin to feel the pressure of carrying to much debt look to debt consolidation as a possible solution to their financial problem.

When most people think of debt consolidation, they mainly think of the process of applying for a loan to payoff or pay down their debt.  In some cases this is an ideal approach to their problem.  For more information on debt consolidation or securing a debt consolidation loan, follow these links:  Debt Consolidation, Consolidate Consolidation Debt, and Debt Consolidation Loan.

The approach were going to look at is the approach that most credit card debt consolidation service organizations use. Again, these organizations do not offer loans to consolidate your debt; they are not financial institutions such as a bank, finance company, or credit union etc.  What they offer is more along the lines of debt management and debt settlement.

Generally this is how it works; you give them your financial information to include your income and all of your outstanding debt accounts.  From there the good one’s help you establish a spending plan or budget and encourage you to learn about financial management.  They usually provide learning resources to help you in that quest.

Once a reasonable spending plan has been established, they will begin the process of working out a debt repayment plan or schedule.  They do this by first contacting all of your creditors and negotiating new terms on your credit card accounts.  Much of the time your creditors will be willing to negotiate new terms on your accounts especially, when they’ve been contacted by a credit card debt consolidation service.

They realize that you must be having problems meeting your obligations, and must be serious about paying them back because you’ve contacted and are working with a professional debt consolidation organization.  That usually makes them willing to be more flexible with their terms.  Theoretically, you can do the same thing, but generally creditors are not as willing to negotiate their terms with the customer.  If you try to negotiate terms on your own, you will have to give some of your creditors an ultimatum in order to get any results.

Once the new terms have been established usually no interest, a lower interest, and a lower monthly payment, you will begin to send one monthly payment to the credit card debt consolidation service; in turn they will pay your individual credit card accounts.  Just be aware that not all organizations and companies out there are on the up and up.  Some people have actually been scammed by these so-called credit card debt consolidation organizations.  Where they made their one monthly payment to the organization but the organization never paid the credit card companies.

Here are a few things to look for when considering a credit card debt consolidation service.

  • Make sure you find out about fees up front – most legitimate organizations charge a one time set up fee in the range of $25.00 to $75.00.  They will also charge a fixed monthly maintenance fee of anywhere from $10.00 to $35.00, or a certain percentage of the overall monthly payment.  Make sure you get a quote in writing for these fees.  If they are unwilling to do this, don’t do business with them.
  • Check with the Better Business Bureau to see if there are any complains filed against the organization.
  • Be especially careful of doing everything over the Internet.  Make sure before you send any money that you’re doing business with an established, reputable credit card debt consolidation service.
